Get your "Bug Out" Ready....

Bug Out Bag....

Odd term, Right?

Wikipedia defines it as...

A portable kit that contains the items one would require to survive for seventy-two hours when evacuating from a disaster.

Basically, if you had get out NOW.   YOU HAVE NO TIME TO PACK...  Your Bug out Bag (BOB) is packed and ready to grab and run. Keep in mind each child and member of your house should have one full of their own essentials (if they are capable of carrying it, of course.)

We have decided to create a NEW AND IMPROVED Bug Out Bag this holiday break. Updating all our clothes and food.

Here's what a typical BOB might have in it...
  • Enough non perishable food for 72 hours (per person) MRE's or Meals Ready to Eat.....are light weight and easy to prepare! You can get these at Walmart for roughly $5 and most will last years!
  • Enough water for 72 hours (per person) This will probably be the heaviest thing needed to carry.
  • Remember to include water for washing, drinking and cooking. Here in the US it is recommended 1 gallon per person per day.
  • I have these straws that you can go up to ANY water ANY where and drink it... From a puddle to a pool. They are $16.95 each.... but you can drink 25 gallons of nasty polluted puddle or lake water.. Because the straw has a filter built in it! Well worth it to have and just store for emergency.
  • A first aid kit
  • Fire starting tool
  • A disaster plan including location of emergency centers, rallying points, possible evacuation routes, etc. Emergency Phone numbers.... If there's no cell phone's and your contact list is gone forever due to a solar flare... will you remember all important numbers and addresses????
  • Professional emergency literature explaining what to do in various types of disaster, studied and understood before the actual disaster but kept for reference
  • Maps and travel information
  • Standard camping equipment, including bathroom supplies, If space is limited it could be as simple as a tarp for a tent. Carried in dad's bug out bag.... of course....lol
  • Weather appropriate clothing , raincoats, hat gloves... Please remember to change the clothing as needed per season and/or growth.
  • Bedtime Items such as sleeping bags and blankets
  • Enough medicine to last an extended evacuation period
  • Medical records, just a good idea to make copies and have them in here, in case your house is burning down, as your running out the door you grab your BOB... and all documents are in it.
  • Pet, child, and elderly care needs *** remember a toy or snuggle*** the little ones will needs some sort of comfort, possibly a deck of cards.
  • Battery or crank operated radio
  • Lighting, battery or crank operated flashlights or glow sticks
  • Gun and appropriate ammunition
  • Cash and change, as electronic banking transactions may not be available during the initial period following an emergency or evacuation...small bills... you wouldn't want to have to buy a loaf of bread with a $100 dollar bill.
  • Positive Identification, such as drivers license, state I.D. card, or social security card
  • Fixed-blade and folding knife
  • Rope, Duct Tape, Paracord
  • Plastic tarps for shelter and water collection
  • Slingshot, pellet gun, blowgun or other small game hunting equipment
  • Wire for binding and animal traps
Seems nearly impossible, I know, but all of this can fit into a back pack. They sell special packs for bug out use. What we did, since my kids cannot carry to much, we just used some old school back packs for them and purchased two more durable packs for my husband and myself.

Good Luck! And remember.....it doesnt all have to be bought and completed today... But it should be started, you never know when disaster may occur....

Glass Doors or window tips!!!

Do you have a glass door or sliding glass doors even a huge window in your kitchen area?

Here are some fun tips I learned a while back...

Give the kids dry erase markers.. and let them be creative all over them.. Fun for them and keeps them busy!

or when school begins...

Let your children practice Math on your glass doors or write Spelling word out on them.. They will love to do this extra studying ... You could even leave the weeks spelling words on the doors for everyone to see all week long..

or...

I use a portion of my glass sliding door to list out my weeks food menu, there's no more wondering what to make for dinner... once a week I put up all the meals and everyone knows...plus I put down our weeks activities.. so everyone knows these plans as well.. (this is especially good for my hubby to know whats going on!)

or....

At holiday times..let the children decorate with the theme of the season... Draw Santa's at Christmas and eggs or crosses at Easter....

But always Remember......... IT MUST BE DRY ERASE MARKERS... =)

What if there was a fire in your home.......NOW!

Do you have ALL your important documents in one specific spot easy to grab as you and your family rush out of the home.?

Here's what you need to make an Emergency Binder
  • 2" or 3" Binder
  • Plastic Page Protectors
  • Tabbed Dividers

Here is a simple list of things to put in this binder...
  • Birth certificates for entire family (a good idea to also have a copy of these stored in a different location)
  • Social Security cards (place a copy of yours in this folder) and this is a good place to store originals for any children
  • A copy of your drivers licence... in case you lose your wallet..
  • passport
  • a list of important numbers, addresses... Include family, friends, business contacts, doctors, ...etc... If for any reason cell phones are not working a lot of us will lose important numbers for when we dial on land lines.
  • scanned copies of photos saved to a CD
  • family history records saved to a CD
  • copies of voter cards
  • any home titles
  • car titles
  • marriage license
  • citizenship papers
  • list of medications you or your family may need
  • any professional licenses you may have
  • copy of living will
  • immunization records
  • copy of Health or dental insurance cards
  • adoption papers
  • insurance records....car or home... or personal
  • investment statements or records ..example..401k
  • home inventory list and pictures of valuables (burned to a CD)

Remember the best thing to have is a fire proof safe to keep this Binder in. But if you haven't purchased one yet...... This might sound silly but if there is a fire and you are away from home AND don't have your fire proof safe.... another possible location to store your binder is in a freezer because it will take a lot during a fire to burn through a freezer ...

Another great idea is to make an extra copy of these things and store them away from home... Maybe at the office or your parents house. It doesn't hurt.....just in case yours is destroyed.. Its better to Be Prepared!

Heading to the cannery....Need Anything while I am there?

I am going this weekend to visit a Cannery in Jacksonville.

I am incredibly excited.

I will have the opportunity to purchase food most with a shelf life of 20 or 30 years to store in my food pantry in case of emergency.

The common item comes in a No. 10 can (which is like a big coffee can).

Each can is roughly $5.00 lil more or less depending on the item. Shelf life is 20 or 30 years depending on the item as well.

Here is a list of some items that will be available::

Do You Homeschool?

Do you home school?.... And Do you want to buy brand new curriculum every year and pay next to nothing?

Here's just a tip of what I do. During the school year my kids do not write in their book at all, we use regular lined paper and all answers go on that.

Then I take and sell their old books on ebay and make enough money selling these books to go and purchase new books for the next school year.

I also "hand me down books" from my oldest child to my youngest.

Each year I spend less then $50 on both kids! And this includes books and supplies (paper, pens, pencils...etc..) And the kids both use new items. We use A Beka Books  www.abeka.com . And if your are interested in a top of the line Christian Based education I highly recommend it. We love it!

Savings Coupon Bug

Since I began couponing years ago, I saved a little bit here and there. Thanks to my mother in law saving the coupons for me.

Since this new "Couponing Craze" began.. I started investigating...

And now I save AT LEAST 50% off my total bill. And where I live this is great because none of the stores around here double coupons.

Plus I have begun a huge stock pile for my emergency food storage!

I do as you see on TV...  I have all my coupons clipped and sorted in plastic baseball card holder sheets. I have ads from every store around. I always use 2 coupons on buy 1 get 1 items! I tend to shop ONLY sale items. And I do spend hours matching and comparing and planning my strategy. And it pays off...

Last week for example, my bill total was $168... and I spent a grand total of $53.  Plus I received a $5 off  coupon on my next trip and gas rewards (at winn dixie)... I just wish we had a store in the area that doubled coupons... I could be spending next to nothing.... ahhh to dream.....

I also broke my order down to use coupons more effectively. Because in last weeks flier for Winn Dixie, it had a $5 off coupon, off of $30 or more. And you could only use it 1 per transaction.. So I just went through 5 times..lol

Scared or Prepared.... Which will you be?

With everything that's going on now.. Poor Economy, Terrorists, Hurricane Season,  Fires, "2012 Fears", the latest I have been hearing is the suns activity...you name it... It is NOT pretty out there..

And quite honestly it never has been or never will be... life is life.. It's how you deal with what ever happens that truly matters. Soo....

Isn't being prepared a good idea?

What is a prepper... A survivalist or "prepper" is an individual or group that prepares or makes preparations in advance of, or prior to, any change in normal circumstances or lifestyle without significant reliance on other persons (i.e., being self-sufficient), or without substantial assistance from outside resources (e.g. government) in order to minimize the effects of that change on their current lifestyle.( thanks wikipedia for that definition)

Do you know our grandparents were always prepared.. Most grew their own gardens, many canned food in preparation for the winter, quite often they had their own wells for water.

We cannot live life and expect others to be there to save us. Here is some ideas to get started with.. do it little by little.. each time you go shopping buy one thing extra.

Think about it...Are you prepared if something like in Japan happened in your area. I live in Florida and I know we are at the start of hurricane season..

Are you prepared if a police man came to your door and said get out you have 10 minutes? We live in Florida.. a fire might be coming and we may be evacuated.

Do You have a 72 hour Emergency Kit for each Family member (and don't forget our 4 legged family members)?
----- 3 days of clothes for your entire family
----- water to cook with, clean with, bathe with
----- food for 3 days
----- a way to cook that food for 3 days
----- dishes to eat from
----- warm blankets for colder nights
----- toiletries
----- medical kit
----- something to keep young children occupied and comforted
----- copies of important documents (so your not searching for
them and or possibly forgetting something important)ie.. birth
certificates, licenses, insurance cards, bank account numbers

***Remember this kit has to be easily accessible and each member should
have their own back pack stored away, so if an emergency came all
you do is say "grab your emergency kit".. And you can be out the door.
Think of the peace of mind you will have if this occurs.. And you
can handle it without fear or worry because you are prepared.

What about an Emergency contact or Location.... What if something happens and we cannot call out. Remember 9/11/01 and cells were crazy busy. Do you and your family all have a place to meet if you cannot meet at your home for whatever reason. Do you all have a long distance contact person set up..So if local calling is a problem you all know to call Aunt Sally in Idaho and she will pass the word around.

Do you have a weather radio? They now have a special band on these radios so you only need to have it tuned into your area. You can leave it plugged in all the time and the alarm will go off  if something is in your area. We just bought a really great one from Ace Hardware for about $90. It is amazing.. It plugs in the wall, is solar powered, battery powered, and crank powered, has the weather radio, regular radio, short wave radio, spots for your cell phone to plug in and charge, USB port, Alarm clock, flash light. Its truly remarkable. Its an ETON. And its recommended and sponsored by the American Red Cross.

What if power is out because of a hurricane for a week or possibly more..
Do you have food and water to last you a week? Or will you be those sad people waiting for FEMA to rescue them... (remember how well that went during Katrina)

Don't forget a way to cook that food without power? Propane eventually runs out of our grills.. so make sure you have ample supply.. maybe even some charcoal... matches (Waterproof matches are the best) and you can make your own of those real easy!
